Ms. Flossie: Descendant of Enslaved People

My grandmother, Irene Nelson, and her friends Ms. Flossie, Ms. Mattie, and Ms. Ellamena, did not have the protections or advocacy I seek to explore and exploit for today’s Black/African Americans and Native Americans. Before I started this journey of examination and advocacy, I did extensive research into my family history, and I interviewed my grandmother’s mentioned friends – though there were many more. My grandmother passed away in August 2008, and Ms. Flossie, age 97, is the last of this group of women. I was able to talk with her in 2014. In this conversation, she entertained me, educated me, and reminded me that this examination and advocacy work is very important and pertinent. Take a listen – watch the recorded conversation.
